Innovate NYC Schools Presents Educational Gaming: Learn to Play, Play to Learn! 

Games create contextual learning opportunities in which the entire point is to fail, because unless you fail you can't figure out how to do better.

The panel will explore current and potential uses of games and game-like elements in the classroom, while outlining some of the barriers to adoption.   We will discuss some successful strategies that have been used in promoting school districts to take smart risks with new learning tools.

Our panelists bring insights from across the industry, including the Executive Director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, a leading think-tank in advancing children’s learning,  two established ed gaming entrepreneurs, and the Co-Director of G4Li, an ed-gaming research center.

Moderator: Michael Levine, Executive Director Joan Ganz Cooney Center 

Bio: Before founding the Cooney Center, Dr. Levine was the senior assistant to the New York City Schools Chancellor and worked on education policy for the NYC Mayor.  He has been a frequent adviser to the White House, the U.S. Department of Education and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and serves on numerous non- profit boards.

Jan Plass, Paulette Goddard Professor of Digital Media and Learning Sciences and Co-Director of G4

Bio: Jan L. Plass, Ph.D. is Professor of Educational Communication and Technology at New York University, where he co-directs the Games for Learning Institute. His research is at the intersection of cognitive science, learning sciences, and design, and seeks to enhance the design of highly interactive visual environments. 


Michael Angst, CEO of E-Line Media 
Bio: Michael is Founder and CEO of E-Line Media, a publisher of digital entertainment that engages, educates and empowers, with a core focus on computer/video games. E-Line works with leading foundations, academics, non-profits and government agencies to harness the power of games for learning, health, and social impact.


David Miller, Chief Learning Architect at Kuato Studios 
Bio: David is Chief Learning Architect for a Kuato Studios, building the world’s first learning game to utilize second generation Artificial Intelligence. David was Lead Researcher on ReadIT – a European Union project on the use of emerging technologies across five European countries. He is also a visiting tutor at Edgehill University, and the University of Glasgow’s Faculty of Education.
